Update: Blizzard Clarifies That Cursing In-Game is Not Automatically Punishable, Context Matters

Blizzard's Customer Support has walked back comments that implied any swearing in WoW is automatically punishable. After the @BlizzardCS account posted that dropping "F bombs" and getting reported leads to consequences — with a follow-up stating "you aren't allowed to curse in our games" — community backlash prompted a clarification: "cursing is not blanket punished within our games: context matters, and in this case, the context warranted upholding the action." Blizzard also acknowledged the original response wasn't up to the quality they expect of themselves.
The concern wasn't just policy confusion — WoW's reporting system has a history of abuse allegations, with players claiming mass reports from Mythic+ groups and even crafting cartels have triggered automated account actions. If a single swear word with no context were enough to trigger a suspension, that's a system ripe for griefing. The clarification helps, but Blizzard admitted they need to "communicate with more clarity moving forward."
