Does Balance Druid Have Too Many Choices? - Balance Druid Retrospective for Midnight

Balance Druid is getting a thorough retrospective heading into Midnight Season 2, and the headline takeaway is that the spec may be too flexible for its own good. On Mythic Belo'ren in Patch 12.0.5, Warcraft Logs shows only 2 talent nodes left completely untouched — Sculpt the Stars and Total Eclipse — which is nearly unheard of on a penultimate single-target boss. That breadth is exciting, but it comes with a steep knowledge tax: interactions between talents like Hail of Stars, Solstice, and Orbit Breaker are poorly communicated in-game, and Orbit Breaker itself is entirely untrackable.

The Starweaver vs. Rattle the Stars choice node is finally competitive thanks to the current tier set and targeted buffs, but each path has real tradeoffs. Starweaver wins on 2–6 targets and movement-heavy fights — most of Voidspire qualifies — while Rattle the Stars pulls ahead on pure single target or 6+ target scenarios. The catch is that Rattle the Stars gameplay can feel rigid and monotonous now that Eclipse has been converted from a passive buff into a traditional cooldown, forcing you to plant and pool Astral Power between casts.

Cooldown clarity remains the spec's biggest pain point. Fury of Elune feels like a damage button but functions almost entirely as a resource generator for Keeper of the Grove and an Atmospheric Exposure activator. New Moon is called out specifically as feeling out of place — numerically beaten by Fury of Elune in the Elune's Chosen build and too slow to cast for too little payoff in Keeper of the Grove builds.
