A Polarizing Talent in the Talent Tree - Survival Hunter Retrospective

Survival Hunter is in a genuinely solid spot heading into 12.1, but Wowhead class writer Doolb has a pointed wishlist. The single-target rotation is the loudest complaint — outside of cooldowns, it's a three-button loop with zero mechanical RNG, so routine that the Pack Leader rotation can be fully mapped on a spreadsheet. The ask is simple: one new baseline ability, ideally an active DoT with a proc attached, something like a Lacerate or Serpent Sting callback to give players something to actually react to.

Primal Surge is the other sticking point. The capstone is so mandatory it locks the entire bottom-right of the tree in place every build, strangling experimentation. Moving it to the second gateway — or making it baseline — would open things up considerably. Meanwhile Flamefang Pitch sits unused all expansion, squeezed out by the point cost of Primal Surge and the Takedown/Savagery/Flanked cluster. Even if the tuning were fixed, a static ground-targeted AoE on a long cooldown is just awkward to play.

On weapons: dual-wield has dominated the entire expansion, turning two-handed drops into loot pool pollution. The fix is already in the game — Lunge, ability damage scaling, and auto-attack tuning are all levers Blizzard could pull more aggressively. A suggested example: shift Lunge to 3% Agility for two-handed versus 1% for dual-wield, and adjust Lethal Barbs to close the gap further. Pet pathing on fights like Chimaerus and spiral-stair dungeons in Windrunner Spire rounds out the feedback as a quality-of-life item worth addressing before The Last Titan.
