New BigWigs Feature Allows Players to Rename Boss Abilities on Timeline

BigWigs just shipped an update letting players rename boss abilities on bars and alerts — so instead of seeing a cryptic spell name, you can label it with exactly what you need to do. You can also export and share your custom names with friends or your whole raid team, making it a handy teaching tool for newer players.

The catch: Blizzard has already gone on record opposing this kind of functionality on Nameplates, stating via the WoWUIDev Discord that rename addons reduce challenge by eliminating the need to learn which casts to interrupt or which enemies to prioritize — forcing them to compensate with larger packs and shorter cast timers that punish players without addons. They noted the same API restrictions are coming "for Midnight." That statement didn't explicitly cover boss timelines, but the reasoning maps directly onto what BigWigs just enabled.

Whether Blizzard moves to lock down the relevant APIs for timeline addons as well remains to be seen, but given their stated position, it wouldn't be surprising.
